 The Review

I just read an amazing book, y'all — Short & Tall Tales in Goose Pimple Junction by Amy Metz.

Short & Tall Tales in Goose Pimple Junction is Book #1.5 in Author Amy Metz's Goose Pimple Junction Mystery series. I previously reviewed Book #1, Murder & Mayhem in Goose Pimple Junction, here.

Amy wrote Short & Tall Tales to answer her readers' burning questions about events that took place between the end of Murder & Mayhem and the beginning of Book #2, Heroes & Hooligans in Goose Pimple Junction, questions such as:
  • How did Johnny Butterfield become police chief?
  • How did Tess and Jack get engaged?
  • How did Ima Jean come to live with Louetta?
If you don't know who Johnny, Tess, Jack, or Louetta are, that probably means that you haven't read Murder & Mayhem yet. The short stories and novella in Short & Tall Tales will be funnier and more enjoyable, if you read Murder & Mayhem in Goose Pimple Junction (available at Amazon) first.

Go ahead and read it now.

We'll wait on you to catch up.

Amy won't mind.

Okay, is everyone back? Wasn't that book great? Now you're ready to read Short & Tall TalesLet me tell you a little more about it.

Goose Pimple Junction is Amy's make-believe town in Tennessee. Tess Tremaine and Jackson (Jack) Wright are the stars of Murder & Mayhem. Johnny Butterfield and Martha Maye Applewhite are the stars of Heroes & Hooligans. One of the stars of Short & Tall Tales, its covergirl Ezmerelda (Ezzie, for short), is Jack's bassett hound. Ezzie is featured in the novella, or Tall Tale, about Johnny Butterfield's first days as Police Chief.

from Animalia Life

The Tall Tale begins a few hours after the concluding events of Murder & Mayhem, with  the interview of Johnny for Police Chief, and concludes with him solving two big cases.

In addition to the Tall Tale, there are five short stories, featuring various citizens of Goose Pimple Junction:
  • A Right Good Choice
  • Is It Hot Enough For You?
  • Don't Mess With Maude
  • Take It, Take It, Take It
  • Say Yes, Tess!

I really enjoyed a scene with Caledonia Culpepper and her son, a high school student. Caledonia is in her early 40s and takes great pride in her appearance. Her son works after school at Blue Million Books, with Louetta (the owner of the shop) and Tess.

The three of them like to cut up and joke with each other while they're working. For example, if one of them remarks that a shelf is dusty, someone else chimes in with "You're dusty." Caledonia, not knowing about their game, tells her son that his t-shirt is wrinkled. And her son says, "You're ...."

If you want to find out what happens next, and I know you do, you'll have to read the book!

Short & Tall Tales in Goose Pimple Junction was a quick read for me. I finished it in one day. The Short Tales are indeed short. At the end of each one, I said to myself that since that story was short, and so entertaining, I had time to read the next one. That went on for all five stories. Then the novella got very interesting very quickly, with a lot going on, and I just couldn't put it down.

Most of the characters from Murder & Mayhem are still residing in Goose Pimple Junction for Short & Tall Tales. I enjoyed visiting with them again. Author Amy Metz continues to demonstrate her love for Southerners and the South in these tales. She still writes each character in a realistic, distinctive, and three-dimensional manner, even if he or she is present for only a snippet of a story.

I highly recommend Short & Tall Tales in Goose Pimple Junction to all fans of Cozy Mysteries. I think fans of Southern humor, like TV's Designing Women and Larissa Reinhart's Cherry Tucker Mysteries (Larissa calls the genre "Hick Lit"), will especially like the Goose Pimple Junction books and stories. Author Amy Metz has Book #3 in the works, Rogues & Rascals In Goose Pimple Junction. This book will feature Caledonia Culpepper in the starring role. I am looking forward to reading it!

I love Short & Tall Tales in Goose Pimple Junction, and deem it worthy and deserving of our highest rating, Five Kitties.
